ARTWORK: Buffalo, Consumerized – FC Buffalo Part 2

Without any inclination to continue my Buffalo, Consumerized series, I found a photo from the FC Buffalo victory against FC Sonic that worked for me. I liked the diagonals contrasting against the previous entry’s horizontal lines, moving the logo and stars into the empty field at left, ready to be taken out by the soon to be struck ball. There isn’t really much more to say. The image once more deals with the lower bodies of the players, focusing on the feet and the real action of the game. By…

PHOTOGRAPHY: FC Buffalo defeats FC Sonic 2-0

The FC Buffalo Blitzers played their rematch against FC Sonic on June 19, 2010. After losing 1-0 on June 11 due to a questionable call late, revenge was in the air and the Blitzers went for the jugular all game, never relenting after going up 1-0 early. Goal scorers were Andy Tiedt in the 16′ and Mike Unwin in the 80′. Goalkeeper Dan Panaro registered his second clean sheet victory of the season and was named man of the match. FC Sonic was undefeated and at the top of standings…

ARTWORK: Buffalo, Consumerized – FC Buffalo

Continuing the Buffalo, Consumerized series, this entry is the first with a landscape orientation and also to include a logo that is actually in use. The previous four entries portrayed architectural institutions within the city (BECHS, Central Terminal, Richardson Towers, and North Park Theatre), this one expands upon the concept with the depiction of what hopes to be a static fixture in Buffalo’s sports world, FC Buffalo. Due to the horizontal nature of a sport played on a field laterally, going landscape was a no-brainer, (especially since almost all my…

PHOTOGRAPHY: FC Buffalo’s First Franchise Victory

June 6, 2010 is the day that the FC Buffalo Blitzers soccer team broke free, scored their first goal, added a second, and put up a clean sheet for the first ever victory in franchise history over NJ Blaze. The match was lopsided in Buffalo’s favor right from the get-go, out-shooting and out-playing their opponents. Tied 0-0 going into the half, Andy Tiedt scored in the 64th minute and then Scott Zorn put it away with a strike in the second minute of extra time, cementing the win—the first of…

DESIGN: Dave & Adam’s Card World [spec]

Looking to get away from their hard to decipher at small sizes Earth wrapped in ribbon logo, a friend at Dave & Adam’s Card World asked me to try and come up with a modern alternative to show his bosses. Trying to simplify the icon into a representation of the ownership by reducing it to their initials much like the hobby store’s website does, I found myself combining the “D” and “A” together into one. It’s the ampersand via white space that separates the two letters, also creating the platform…

DESIGN: Rochester Broadway Theatre League 2009/2010 Season

2009/2010 Rochester Broadway Theatre League 2009/2010 Season, published by Buffalo Spree Publishing, Inc. Each performance at the Auditorium Theatre, on behalf of RBTL, has imagery and production notes supplied from the traveling company. RBTL created a new logo for the 2009/2010 season and from that I created a straight-forward layout, designing specific pages for each program, (like those depicted), as needed.

ARTWORK: Buffalo, Consumerized

Recently asked to be a part of an alumni art show at my old high school Kenmore East, in conjunction with their 50th anniversary celebration this year, I was left without a clue as to what I should submit. Suggested to send over a design piece I had done, the prospect just didn’t appeal due to the fact that putting a logo or an ad on the wall never really screamed out ‘art’ to me as far as a gallery setting. And if I wanted to show a creative fine…

DESIGN: Local athletes bring soccer to Buffalo

Starting in September 2009, my friend Nick Mendola asked if I could help him and co-owners Scott Frauenhofer and Ryan Knapp to create a logo for a soccer team that they were bringing to the area. A member of the National Premier Soccer League, FC Buffalo was born. It is a great organization that looks to really help expose the sport to Buffalonians and Western New Yorkers in general. As the site says, this squad will be “a mix of the area’s best amateur, collegiate and post-collegiate players suiting up…

DESIGN: Cigarette Sonatas cover

My friend Josh Gaines was looking to publish a second printing of his book of short prose Cigarette Sonatas and approached me to design the cover. We settled on creating a high contrast image of a man smoking as a wisp of smoke formed a treble clef above him. Using a dark room with a desk lamp lit brightly behind me, I photographed myself in an old gangster-style hat and then Photoshopped in the cigarette and smoke afterwards. The glow of the butt and the angle it tapered went through…
