2010 P2 Collaborative Conference Program 2010, published by Buffalo Spree Publishing, Inc. Based off of the P2 Collaborative’s design branding and last year’s program, I designed their third annual conference book with minor tweaks, including schedules, speakers, maps, and other weekend activities. The big change this year was a new look cover with supplied image to coincide with new identity.

Nick Mendola—a friend and constant collaborator of mine—had an idea to try and drive funds into the local, Mom-and-Pop businesses of the Western New York region. He was looking to make the city’s restaurants commodities unto themselves by creating a campaign to help push them into the public’s consciousness so entrenched in the allure of national franchises. After hearing his pitch of ideas to give price tags to the city, I came up with an alternative that would actually make the city the price. Using the concept of a barcode,…

2010 The Western New York Performing Arts Guide 2010, published by Buffalo Spree Publishing, Inc. Front Cover: Using the abstract concept of a Buffalo waterfront representation (idea from Art Director Chastity Taber) and basing graphics from the vector artwork of Josh Flanigan, I minimalized the crucial buildings needed for the image to read Buffalo/WNY, and played with their transparency along with added layers of spotlights, all while utilizing bright, vibrant colors to catch the eye. Inside Layout: Building off of 2009’s design, I kept the three column format, reduced the…

Looking to get away from their hard to decipher at small sizes Earth wrapped in ribbon logo, a friend at Dave & Adam’s Card World asked me to try and come up with a modern alternative to show his bosses. Trying to simplify the icon into a representation of the ownership by reducing it to their initials much like the hobby store’s website does, I found myself combining the “D” and “A” together into one. It’s the ampersand via white space that separates the two letters, also creating the platform…

RBTL created a new logo for the 2009/2010 season and from that I created a straight-forward layout, designing specific pages for each program, (like those depicted), as needed.

Starting in September 2009, my friend Nick Mendola asked if I could help him and co-owners Scott Frauenhofer and Ryan Knapp to create a logo for a soccer team that they were bringing to the area. A member of the National Premier Soccer League, FC Buffalo was born. It is a great organization that looks to really help expose the sport to Buffalonians and Western New Yorkers in general. As the site says, this squad will be “a mix of the area’s best amateur, collegiate and post-collegiate players suiting up…

My friend Josh Gaines was looking to publish a second printing of his book of short prose Cigarette Sonatas and approached me to design the cover. We settled on creating a high contrast image of a man smoking as a wisp of smoke formed a treble clef above him. Using a dark room with a desk lamp lit brightly behind me, I photographed myself in an old gangster-style hat and then Photoshopped in the cigarette and smoke afterwards. The glow of the butt and the angle it tapered went through…
